In a bid to foster peace in troubled boundary communities in Cross River and Ebonyi states, the governments of both states have met and agreed that the various moribund peace committees at the four flash points of dispute will be resurrected.
This among others were the resolutions of a joint meeting of officials from Cross River and Ebonyi states who yesterday met in at the Cross River Deputy Governor’s conference room in Peregrino House, Calabar.
The flash points which are Yala/Izzi, Obubra/Abakaliki, Obubra/Ikwo and Abi/Ikwo will see their peace committees meet bi-monthly on rotational basis with effect from July 10, 2015 according to a communique presented at the end of the meeting and jointly signed by the deputy governors of Cross River and Ebonyi states, Professor Ivara Esu and Barrister Eric Igwe.
The statement also directed traditional rulers in the affected communities to “embark on enlightenment campaigns to foster peace at the boundary communities and to maintain the status quo pending the final demarcation of both state boundary lines”.
Other resolutions included the re-constitution of the governor’s committee, the terms of reference of the central committee and the creation of a six-man sub committee at each of the four sectors in dispute which will have the affected local government area Chairman and Secretary serve as chairman and secretary respectively, as well as their operational terms of reference.
