The Director of Welfare, Students´ Union Government, SUG, University of Calabar has held a medical outreach as part of activities to mark the SUG Health Week.
The health week which according to Alawa John Adie, the SUG Director of Welfare, is a program meant to help students come to terms with their health status, as early detection can lead to early correction.
“This health outreach became necessary because of the kind of environment we find ourselves. students stay in cramped rooms and use unhealthy toilets. The test being conducted will assist them on how to live from now.” he said.
On the issue of funding, Alawa revealed that “the school did not approve the funds for this. I had to go outside and source for funds.”
Students who spoke to our correspondent expressed happiness over the health week, describing the SUG Director of Welfare as a shining light from this SUG dispensation
Etimbuk Daniel, a 200 level student in Radiography said the health week is timely, especially as students have given up on the current SUG dispensation. According to him “the malaria test is the one I went for and I got drugs after my result was out”
Another student Adah Philips on his own said “apart for the distance between the hostel and the medical center where I went for the eye check up everything went on fine. I think this is the first this sort of medical outreach will be done in this university, and am to have benefit from it.
The health week included a rally, a health symposium where medical practitioners were invited to speak to students about some ailments and the benefits accruing from the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), free eye, HIV, malaria, STI, hepatitis screening.
