The first semester examinations of the 2014/2015 session in the Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH) may again be postponed if the management and academic staff do not agree on the new continuous assessment by the weekend.

The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Owan Enoh in a circular, notified students, staff and the public of the abolition of Continuous Assessment in the institution following an abuse of the system which sees students get 30 out of the total 100 marks through assignments, test and or practicals.

The CRUTECH Chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities led by Dr. Stephen Ochang immediately wrote demanding the reversal of the abolition which till now has not been done according to sources.

Ochang in a telephone conversation with CrossRiverWatch said he believes the management and ASUU will find a meeting point before examinations begin on Monday, August 31, 2015.

The policy also splits opinion between students as some say it will help checkmate the excesses of some lecturers while students in engineering and environmental sciences querying the rationale behind it, arguing that practicals form part of their assessments.

A senior staff in the faculty of science in a chat with our correspondent says the development is in variance with the provisions of the Nigeria Universities Commission and the Nigeria policy on education which demands continuous assessment forms 30 percent of the total assessment.

In a related development, staff of the institution continue their hunger strike in a bid to get what CrossRiverWatch learnt is a four months arrears.
