Immediate past governor of Cross River State, Liyel Imoke has assured the people of the state of his commitment to continue to render service in any capacity he finds himself.
The governor stated this in Calabar during his investiture as a Cross Bearer by Cross River State Christian Leadership Forum (CROSSLEF).
A Cross-Bearer is someone who carries a religious burden with a task to do justice, equity and peace for the period he holds the position.
The former governor according to Cross River State Christian Leadership Forum, was given the task based on what it described as “exemplary leadership” of Imoke and his role in bringing the church and Christians together during his tenure as governor of Cross River State.
Speaking during the event held at Transcorp Hotels, Calabar, the President of Cross River State Christian Leadership Forum, Bishop Joseph Bassey said the task given to the former governor was a big burden which he should not take lightly.
“We gave you this task because we believe you have the capacity, humility and religious background that can enable you to continue service to the Christians and humanity in Cross River State and beyond.
“This is a big burden that should not be taken lightly because your leadership service, your peacemaking attributes and above all your devotion to Christianity and humanity is now endless.
“Your acceptance to become a Cross Bearer given to you on this day before this great men and women is a testimony of your person and your humble background” He said.
Responding, the former governor, Liyel Imoke said he will justify his actions and deeds as a Cross Bearer by continuing to render service to mankind.
Imoke said he was surprised that being a former Governor, such an enviable position could still be given to him in a state where past leaders are not recognized in their home state.
He said he was aware of the burden given to him as a Cross Bearer, assuring that he will continue to do his best to change the life of people where ever he finds himself.
“This is indeed a great burden on me as a Cross Bearer and when Bishop Bassey told me about it I tried all I could to dodge it but I was made to understand it’s importance to mankind.
“Let it be known here today that I didn’t know how this event was organized and what they spent to put it in place and that’s how I believe it should be” Imoke said.
The event was attended by the state governor represented by his deputy, Professor Ivara Esu, Federal and state lawmakers as well as top clergymen.
