The 2016 Armed Forces Remembrance Week was yesterday rounded off with the laying of wreaths at the tomb of the unknown soldiers at the Millennium Park (Cenotaph), Calabar.

The event which had earlier commenced with the launching of the Armed Forces Remembrance Emblem, Jumat Muslim service at Nigerian Army Barracks, Akim and a Christian church service at Apostolic Church, Edgerley Road, is an annual event in honor of Nigerian fallen heroes who lost their lives in the first and second world wars, the Nigerian civil war as well as peace keeping operations across the world.

It was originally celebrated on November 11 to mark the end of the two world wars but later changed to mark the end of the Nigerian Civil War on January 15, 1970.

The ceremony witnessed a 21 gun salutes, and the inspection of Guard of Honor mounted by men of the Armed Forces by Cross River State governor, Senator Ben Ayade.

Among those who performed the wreath laying ceremony were deputy governor, Prof Ivara Esu, Speaker of the State House of Assembly, John Gaul Lebo, state Chief Judge, Justice Okoi Ikpi Itam, represented by Justice Michael Edem as well as service commanders.

Others were state Commissioner of Police, chairman of the Nigerian Legion, chairman of the Traditional Rulers Council and a representative of the diplomatic corps.

Highlight of the event was the release of 21 white pigeons by the governor to depict peace in the country.
