Two officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC have been confirmed dead after there were shot by an armed policeman in Calabar and are now in the morgue CrossRiverWatch can report authoritatively.
CrossRiverWatch gathered that some armed policemen yesterday at about 7pm mounted a road block just by the gate of the Civil Defence station in Calabar South, while they flagged vehicles to collect bribes.
Some Civil Defence officers, in uniform, who were also armed and in their service vehicle were returning from patrol and trying to turn into their office. They had an altercation with the policemen who mounted the ‘toll block’ by their gate.
According to eye witnesses, it was in the course of the altercation that one of the armed policemen drew his gun and started shooting at the Civil Defence officers who did not respond with fire.
One of the officers, a Sergeant in the Civil Defence died on the spot and another officer who was said to be the leader of the team was rushed with bullet wounds to the hospital and has been confirmed dead this morning.
“Most of the Civil Defence officers ran into their compound when the policeman started shooting. They were armed too but did not respond with fire. Just imagine that they also started shooting back, what would have happened to passers-by? One of the eye witnesses told CrossRiverWatch.
The Cross River State Commandant of NSCDC, Dayo Adesuyi was overhead by one of our reporter this morning while addressing anxious family members of the deceased, confirming that at about 7:45pm yesterday, some of his men who were returning from patrol in their patrol van, fully armed and all in uniform were attacked by policemen who mounted a road block by their entrance gate.
He said two of the Civil Defence officers where shot by the policeman. According to the Commandant, one died on the spot and the other who was taken to the hospital has been confirmed dead this morning.
Adesuyi was not particularly sure whether there was altercation before the shooting as investigation is still ongoing.
When CrossRiverWatch called the State Police Spokesman, Mr. John Eluu, to react to the development, he was not willing to speak on the matter.
“I don’t know anything about the shooting. I have not been briefed on the matter so you should call the Police Commissioner.”
CrossRiverWatch has tried to reach the Commissioner, Mr. Henry Fadairo but calls to his phone are still being diverted at the time of filing this report.
But CrossRiverWatch also gathered that the killer policeman has since been taken into custody.
