The Senate of the Students Union Government (SUG), University of Calabar has suspended the President of the Union, Comrade Ekpo Tete and the Director of Socials, Comrade Richard Unwana to allow for investigation into allegations of abuse of office, misconduct, extortion among others levelled against them.
In a letter dated 30th March, 2016 signed by the Senate President, Senator Aleka Moses, scribe of the Senate, Senator Vincent Chidera and Chairman House Committee on facts finding, Senator Idaka Elen, addressed to the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Zana Akpagu, and made available to our news room, the legislators alleged that: “A petition was sent to the Senate against Comrade Ekpo Tete Okon for grievous misconduct which involves abuse of office, financial impropriety, mismanagement, embezzlement and squander mania.”
The Senate also accused the SUG President of lying before the Senate stating that he claims to have only received the sum of twenty five thousand naira (N25, 000) only from the inception of his government, only for the Senate investigation to unravel that 70% of the unions budget approved has been released and the President already received about 40% of the amount released.
The Senate therefore, among other things said that the SUG President is suspended pending the conclusion of investigation into the allegations levelled against him and directed him to handover all union properties within his possession to the secretariat of the union.
Relatively, Comrade Umanah Richard, Director of Socials is suspended for alleged “inefficiency, abuse of office, extortion from students and for abridging the peace of Malabor (the hostel).”
Reacting when contacted, the embattled SUG President who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Comrade Solomon Harry described the news as a “mere speculation” as his principal has not received any notification to that effect.
All efforts to hear from the suspended Director of Socials were not successful at the time of filing this report.
