Worried by the recent communal clash between Nko and Mkpani Communities in Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State, the People of Yakurr in Abuja under the aegis of The Yakurr Peoples Club (YPC) held an extra ordinary meeting to chat the way forward for sustainable peace to prevail among the two communities of Nko and Mkpani as well as an amiable, amicable and peaceful co-existence among the Yakurr communities of Ugep, Idomi, Ekori, Mkpani, Nko, Iyinma, Agoi and Assiga.
The extra ordinary meeting Chaired by Barrister Grace Nsot, a Director with the Legal Aids Council had in attendance the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Pastor Usani Uguru Usani and other Eminent Sons and daughters of Yakurr Local Government Area.
After deliberation on the way forward for enduring peace among communities in Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State, the extra ordinary meeting arrived at eleven point resolutions.
In the communique which was signed by the President of the Barrister Sunday Ikpi and Omini Odein, the group resolve that:
1. Yakurr People in Abuja condemned the Nko-Mkpani communal clash with a call for a thorough inquest into it and perpetrators prosecuted and made to face the full weight of the law.
2. They appealed to the Cross River State Government to expedite action in rehabilitating damaged schools and other public utilities for use by the people.
3. A fifteen member visitation team to Nko and Mkpani as well as all the other Yakurr Communities was constituted.
4. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Cross River State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) should assist provide relief materials to those who suffered losses as a result of the communal clash.
5. In the reconciliatory moves, Truth, Fairness, Equity and the spirit of Forgiveness should prevail among communities of yakurr Local Government Area.
6. Yakurr traditional rulers should as a matter of urgency adopt a traditional settlement mechanism of the differences between the two Communities of Nko and Mkpani and also fashion out a mechanism that will put in check such occurrence in future among Yakurr communities.
7. There should be a defined boundary demarcation exercise among the Yakurr communities and a traditional committee set up to this effect for routine visitations and monitoring on a regular basis.
8. The Yakurr Local Government Council in conjunction with the Yakurr Traditional Rulers council should work together to ensure the eradication of cult, cultists and other unwholesome groups in all Yakurr communities.
9. The association of retired security operatives in Yakurr Local Government Area should be encouraged to be more proactive to always assist nib in the bud such developments in Yakurr before they escalate.
10. An annual, monthly or quarterly colloquium as appropriate of the Yakurr people for an appraisal of activities among the Yakurr Communities should be instituted.
11. It commends the peace and reconciliatory initiative so far deployed by the Yakurr Traditional Rulers Council, Yakurr Local Government Council and the Cross River State Government.
