Another fire outbreak has been recorded at the female hostel of Cross River State College of Education Awi/Akamkpa barely three weeks after a major inferno enveloped the building.
Our reporters on the ground say that on the night of 13th of June, 2016 while the hostel dwellers were asleep, fire broke out from the same electrical source which caused the first attack weeks back as reported by CrossRiverWatch. The next day being 14th June, the hostel dweller (both male and female) teamed up and staged a protest.
As part of the protest to show their grievances the angry students locked the school gate preventing anyone from entering until the provost, Dr. Ejue James and some management team arrived the scene.
As a result, Dr. Ejue, lecturers, and staff of the college and other students were not allowed in, cars were parked outside, after which the Provost lead the team trekking from the school gate to the open pavilion where the angry students poured water on him.
The euphoric students were seen jubilating and singing, “Provost promise and fail, lie lie Provost, you ate our money.”
Also while trying to calm the situation, the Students Union Government President of the College, Oben Bassey was stoned and prevented from talking.
The Provost in his address vowed to fix the hostel as soon as possible, as he expressed dismay with the water poured him.
Afterwards he led the team again trekking to the hostel for supervision and asked all hostel dwellers to vacate in less than 48 hours so that work can begin immediately. He warned that anyone who stays behind after the expiration of the 48 hours will be arrested because such a person will hinder the progress of the work.
The students lamented that they pay N10, 000 (Ten Thousand Naira) for hostel accommodation but they get poor services.
Our reporters also observed that the hostels of the college are built with just one entrance and no exit for emergencies.
