The Cross River State Internal Revenue Service (CRSIRS) has been accused of using forceful and unconventional means to collect taxes from traders through its agents.
The Chairman, Building Materials Traders Association in the state, Francis Mbonu made the allegations while answering questions bordering on taxation in the state on “The Dialogue With Agba Jalingo”, a live radio program aired every Sunday on Hit 95.9 FM Calabar recently where he called on the state government to harmonize taxes and use the staff in the CRSIRS rather than the “agents” been used presently.
“The man brought from Lagos came here and were (sic) trying to collect tax under gun point” Mbonu could be heard saying in a video clip obtained by CrossRiverWatch from Giants Concepts, the content providers of the program.
Cautioning the state on whom to choose as ‘Agents’, Mbonu said that those contracted by the state government came to their shops with a “combined team of Navy, Police and Army” which he said was a wrong approach as the taxpayer is being “intimidated”.
He also spoke on multiple and arbitrary taxations.
