The Cross River University of Technology came alive on Thursday, September 22nd 2016 as it played host to the 2016 Prep2Grad Symposium – The CRUTECH Edition.
The Symposium is a flagship initiative of the Afterschool Centre for Career Development – a non-governmental, capacity development organization committed to inspiring, investing and engaging young people as well as facilitating growth opportunities for young persons in transitional stages of their lives
Held at the Faculty of Education, Conference Hall 1, the symposium was billed to inspire and empower students with career planning tools and services to enable them plan towards their graduation from tertiary institutions.
It also provided opportunity for young Nigerians and graduands who are in their transitional stages in life to be able to learn from accomplished peers thereby enabling them to develop tailor-made career development plans, access career coaches/mentors and expand their social capital through internships/job placements.
Speaking at the event, the Founder/Faculty Lead of the Afterschool Center For Career Development, Miss Esther Eshiet stated ‘Our thematic focus for the 2016 Symposium (The Knowledge Economy) is intended to bring to the notice of Undergraduates that the climate of the workplace has changed from how many degrees you possess, to what you can do for yourself, and what you can deliver/sell as value to a company or clients therefore beyond aiming for a degree; gain skills.’
Speakers at the event engaged participants under the sub themes: Entrepreneurship: Strategies for creating an irresistible value facilitated by Blessing Akpan, who is the Managing Consultant, The Bridge Consulting & Team Lead, CBN South South Entrepreneurship Development Centre,
Brand Positioning in the Knowledge Economy: What works and how? facilitated by Ete Assam, Chief Mixiologist & Chef, Ette Fingerlickin while the session on Digital Jobs: Creating your digital footprint was addressed by Hope Obeten, Marketing Manager, Calabar International Conference and Convention Center (CICCC) & Founder, Calabarblog.com.
A CV writing workshop was led by the Faculty lead of the Afterschool Center for Career Development, Miss Esther Eshiet.
Other highlights of the event included a Questions and Answers interactive session where participants asked speakers a variety of questions on their career journeys and their pre-graduation endeavours and decisions.
Some Participants won various prizes instituted by some of the speakers. The prizes comprised scholarships for training, meal vouchers, books, and movie tickets.
