How Students Are Fighting Gangstarism In Yakurr

Students of Yakurr origin have joined the fight to end gangstar related activities which have led to unrest in several parts of the local government area.

The approach utilized by the students under the aegis of the National Association of Yakurr Students Worldwide (NAYSWW) is reorientation.

And as part of activities to mark its students week in 2017, tje group invited the Police to school youths on the menace of gangsterism in a one day Seminar held in Ugep.

The theme of the seminar was “Evil of Cultism” and the President of the students body, Emmanuel Obeten said the theme was apt due to recent happenings which portrayed the local government area in bad light.

The keynote speaker was Superintendent of Police (SP) Anagor Chinedu who heads the Yakurr Division of the Nigeria Police Force.

In his paper titled “The Bad Effects of Cultism,” SP Anagor blamed gangstars for the violence in the society and cautioned the students to  desist from gangstar related acts as it will lead to poor performances in school as well as a worthless life.

He urged them to resist attempts by persons or group of persons trying to co-opt them into gangs and maintained that there was nothing to gain but much to lose by joining them.

He charged the youths to cooperate with the Police so as to fight the menace of gangstarism and commended the students body for organizing the seminar.

Yakurr of recent has been plagued with bad press due to gang activities which began earlier in the year when one gang accused another of killing its member.

This led the rival gang to make findings and when they attempted approaching the Obol Lopon of Ugep, Obol Ofem Ubana to report on their findings, met a brick wall when they were prevented from gaining access to the palace by bodyguards of the Obol whom they accused of being members of another gang.

The melee degenerated into a gun battle with one Junior Iroegbu shot dead which prompted his uncle, Mr. Okoi Obono-Obla who is the Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on prosecution to write several petitions which led to the arrest of suspected killers of Mr. Iroegbu and Obol Ofem.

Obol Ofem was later released after questioning and made Paramount Ruler of Yakurr.

He had earlier declared a war against gangstars and recently spat fire when he said gangstars will pay with their heads for every blood they spill.
