Cross River Governor, Senator Ben Ayade is currently attending the South South public lecture on security organized by the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital.
Mr. Ayade is one of the three governors in attendance with his counterparts in Akwa Ibom, Mr. Udom Emmanuel and Rivers State, Mr. Nyesom Wike.
The theme of the lecture is “Socio-Economic Impact and Conflicts Resolution Perspectives” with Professor Oshita Oshita billed as the keynote speaker.
Also in attendance is the Minister of Niger Delta affairs, Usani Usani who chairs the event while his counterpart in the budget and national planning ministry, Udo Udoma is the cochairman.
The Police IG, Mr. Idris in his remarks said he hopes the lecture series will aid the Police to tackle the security challenges Nigeria currently faces.
“Every nation deserves security for social and economic development,” said Mr. Idris who maintained that the first lecture was a series and after this, which is the second, dates for other geopolitical zones will be announced.
He said that the Police will continuously strive to implement its mandate enshrined in Section 4 of the Police act with the aim of restoring “the confidence of the people in our police force.”
He said the force has deployed many strategies under his watch to ensure that there is peace.
Adding that the preventive strategies put in place has helped curb insurgency, militancy, cattle rustling as well as curtailing IPOB.
He called for the support of every citizen of the country and said the Police will “Need to constantly engage the citizenry,” as the Police “cannot do it alone.”
He pledged that the police will abide by democratic ethos in policing.
