The Police in Yakurr local government area have arrested a suspect believed to be among three assailants who robbed and killed a commercial cyclist’s in Ugep, Yakurr last week.
“The suspect in our custody was arrested through the collaboration of the Ekori and Mkpani cyclist union,” a source in the Ugep division of the Nigeria Police told CrossRiverWatch.
“They carried him to the Obol Lopon before bringing him to our station. But, we are going to send the suspect in our custody back to Nko police division today because the incidence happened in Nko.
“They will carry out the investigation before sending the culprits to Calabar,” the source added.
CrossRiverWatch further gathered that two of the three suspects hail from Ekori while the other is from Agoi Ekpo.
Also, the suspect is said to have escaped lynching due to the timely intervention of the Police.
Following his arrest, hundreds of youths stormed the Police station demanding his release to them to be mobbed despite repeated refusal by the Police.
The Obol Lopon of Ugep, Obol Ofem Ubana later addressed the youths and advised against unlawful vengeance.
He averred that: “My people dont put the laws into your hands. Let us allow the Police to carry out their duties. This is a robbery and murder case. I assure you all the culprits will be judged accordingly. Please don’t cause violence so that our government will bring good things in our land like Area Police Command.”
The unnamed cyclist was ambushed on Christmas eve between Agoi Ekpo and Nko and is said to have been from Convent, Ugep.
