The Police in Cross River State have arrested one, Mrs. Christiana James and are in search of another man identified as Nsikak for battering 3 girls and accusing them of witchcraft.
Mrs. Christiana who is cooling her heels at the Diamond Hill Police Station is said to be the grandmother of the children whose both parents are dead.
Speaking to CrossRiverWatch, Mr. Kebe Ikpi, the Program Manager of Basic Rights Counsel Initiative, a non-governmental organization based in Calabar, who rescued the children, said that the children; 2, 5 and 13 years old stay with their grandmother in the village at Akamkpa Local Government area.
Kebe stated that the children were forced to hawking sachet water to feed, and that the grandmother on that particularly day, invited Nsikak to help torture the children to confess to the witchcraft accusation.
The children said they agreed that they were witches because they could no longer bear the pain that Nsikak was administering to them.
Kebe added that the group is against torture of all kinds, especially when directed at children.
He said BRCI will work with the police to bring the case to logical conclusion by making sure the perpetrators face the full wrath of the law.
