By Ogar Monday

The University of Calabar has concluded plans to adopt the four (4) point grading system from the current 2017/2018 which will see it stop the issuance of pass degrees in the institution says the Director of Academic Planning, Dr. Donald Enu.

This was contained in an internal memo signed by Enu with reference number UC/AP 1 and addressed to Deans, Directors and Heads of Departments and dated March 19, 2018 which said this was part of the new regulations of the Nigerian Universities Commission.

The letter sighted by CrossRiverWatch read in part: “My memo to the Vice Chancellor on the 19th June, 2017 on the above subject matter and the Vice Chancellor’s approval to implement the grading system refers.

“I wish to notify Deans, Directors and HODs that with effect from the 2017/2018 academic session, the University of Calabar has adopted a new grading system which goes with a new degree classification. For the avoidance of doubt, the New Grading System is the 4 point grading system. This will therefore become our standard parameter as we drive our university for higher ranking.”

The letter explained that with the 4-point grading structure anyone who scores 70 and above has A but with a 4-point , 60 to 69 scores a B but with 3 point, 50-59 scores a C with 2 point, and45-49 scores a D with 1 point.

Furthermore, “the 4 point grading system has giving rise to a new degree classification, with students with CPGA of 3.50-4.00 graduating with a first class degree ,3.00-3.49 second class (upper division) 2.00-2.99Second Class(lower division) and 1.00-199 with a third class,” the institution said.

“With the above structure, pass degree is hereby eliminated as no student with a CGPA of less than 1.00 is expected to earn a university degree. Moreso, in this arrangement, the minimum pass mark is 45% for all categories of students,” the letter added.
