UPDATE: 3 Feared Dead In UNICAL Gang Bloodbath

By CrossRiverWatch Admin

At least three are feared dead after rival gangs engaged in a gun duel at the University of Calabar leading to an early shut down of activities at the institution on Friday.

CrossRiverWatch had reported that one was shot dead by an unknown gunman at the gate close to the Varsity’s power house.

And, eyewitnesses say another was shot dead close to the new education block which is behind the library complex.

A third was shot close to the small gate at Goldie street and with the blood stains on the ground still visible as at 6:00PM Friday evening the source said.

As at press time, it was unclear the gangs that are perpetrating the act.

But, CrossRiverWatch gathered that the fight has been ongoing for weeks with a melee at Malabor square last night probably igniting the gun battle.

“Shots were fired, a guy was chased up to the CES block, I guess he had a gun in a bag which he threw away but was still being chases by students and security. I learnt he was later caught, it is a sad situation,” said a student (names withheld) who was close to the Vice Chancellor office when the first victim was gunned down close to the power house.

She continued: “A lecturer’s car was also vandalized by these boys opposite the basketball court and they have locked us in the hostel while the Goldie gate is shut permanently.”

The Varsity’s management and Police authorities are yet to comment on the matter.
