90% Of Cross River Government Vehicles Are Unlicensed – Cross River Road Safety Boss

By Ogar Monday

The Sector Commandant of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Cross River State Command, Chidebere Nkwonta has pleaded with the Cross River State Government to set an example for other motorists by registering its vehicles, saying 90% of the State Government vehicles still remain unregistered despite many pleas by the Command.

The Commandant who was speaking when the Director General of the Greater Calabar City Development Authority paid him a familiarization visit in his office stated that the Commission does not have the moral justification to chase after motorists for not registering their vehicle when the State Government has refused to set example.

“When we arrest these persons driving State Government unregistered vehicles they start fighting with our personnels and then bring the mobile Courts. We are handicapped. We have even pleaded with the Governor to wave this license fee and procure plate numbers for these vehicles but as we speak nothing has been done.” He revealed.

Chidebere added that what the Corps does is community service and that they are ready to work with any organization that is willing to partner to make the roads safe for the users.

Earlier speaking, the Director General of the Greater Calabar City Development Authority, Mr. Kingsley Ikpeme informed the Commandant and his team that the Agency has just being created and that his visit is to create a working relationship with parastatals that are on his line of duty.

“In recognition of the role of the Federal Road Safety Corps as the department of Government with the constitutional role of keeping public order, safety and enforcing the laws on our roads, that is why we are here to seek for synergy, support and cooperation from your organization to ensure that lives and properties are safe while on the road.”  He said.
