UNICAL Signs Agreements With Broadcast Firms To Train Journalism Students

The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has signed agreements with the Cross River State Broadcasting Corporation (CRBC) and Hit FM for the training of students of the Department of Mass Communication and Digital Media.

This is geared towards equipping students of the department with requisite practical skills in digital media and broadcasting said the Head of Department, Dr. Joseph Ekpang while on visits to the two media outfits.

A release by the Varsity quotes Ekpang as saying that the agreement will also enable students learn current trends in media practice in order for them to compete favorably with their contemporaries across the world.

Ekpang who said the agreement was in line with the vision of the Varsity’s management to produce value driven graduates also commended the media outfits for taking up the onerous task of training its students, saying that with their support students of the Department would excel in their profession.

The training will span for a period of two years and will encourage beneficial exchange of ideas between the institution and the media organisations.

Furthermore, he described the heads of both broadcasting outfits as, “tested and trusted media gurus who have recorded notable achievements in the media industry.”

In her remarks, the General Manager, CRBC, Mrs. Teresa Essien commended the initiative and stressed the need for training and retraining of media professionals.

Essien who posited that fraternising with professionals will aid the students pledged her readiness to groom them to become better media practitioners even as she urged them to take the training seriously.

Similarly, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Hit FM, Mr. Patrick Ugbe said that by training students on the practical aspects of their profession, the institution has proven to be a reputable institution which promotes academic excellence.

Mr. Ugbe said his organization would do the needful as regards the training, assuring that they would take it upon themselves to tutor the students on basic skills in media practice.
