The Nigeria Society of Engineers NSE, in Cross River state has described the decision of the Cross River state government to bring in Chinese to build a central motor park in Calabar as “unfortunate.”
The society said there is enough capacity among indigenous engineers to deliver projects that are continually given to foreigners.
Engineer Joseph Ukpata, the State Chairman of NSE who spoke to CrossRiverWatch today said: “From the side of Nigeria Society of Engineers NSE, I’m not even aware that some people have come for whatever reason. If they have done so, I’m not involved, it’s unfortunate.
“But I think those who brought the people should be in a better position to explain why they are doing what they are doing without carrying us along.”
On whether our local engineers can deliver, he said: “One thing I want to let you know is that, the engineers we have in this state, they are not different from the engineers we have in any part of the world.
“Perhaps, what is different, is the opportunities before each one. I speaking to you here, I have had many dealings to do with people in terms of studying with people from other parts of the world. And in terms of practice, we have worked with people who are engineers, trained from other places.
“I have had the opportunity of studying with people from different parts of the world, studying engineering together. I think when I’m talking, am talking from a position of advantage. And this people don’t generally do better than us. So what only happens, is that they have got a system which gives them advantage over us. That’s all I can say. So to answer whether our engineers can deliver on a motor park project, yes our engineers can deliver.” He said.
