All is set to lay late Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Obudu Police Division, Mr. Amawu Gabriel who was allegedly shot dead in what was later termed “accidental discharge” by the then Commissioner of Police, Mr. Nkereuwem Akpan.
The burial arrangements see the opening of mourning house on Wednesday 27th May, 2020 at Mr. Ukani Felix Amawu’s compound, Sankwala, Obanlinku Local Government Area of Cross River State while his body leaves University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) Calabar to Obudu Police divisional Headquarters for a brief lying-in-state.
Funeral mass will be held on Saturday 30th May, 2020 at Mater Redemptoris parish, Sankwala, Obanlinku LGA followed by interment. He passed on at the age of 51.
It can be recalled that the former CP in Cross River State, Nkereuwem Akpan, had confirmed the death of Mr. Gabriel Amawu which occurred during a face-off with some protesting youths from the College of Education, Obudu on Tuesday night, 10th March, 2020.
The family of the deceased had petitioned the Inspector General of Police as they accused six (6) of the late DPO’s subordinates as possible suspects and called for speedy investigation.
According to a statement by the family and made available to our newsroom, the burial will be in line with laid down guidelines for COVID-19.
