The Uyo zone of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission says it is willing to up its game in preventing economic and financial crimes in a bid to redeem the image of the country.
The zonal chairman of the commission, Mr. Edeh Akpa Uchenna stated this, Wednesday in Calabar, the Cross River State during a parley with the media where he lamented the damage corrupt practices has done to Nigeria.
Uchenna who disclosed that the commission’s mandate was beyond arrest, investigations and prosecution, but, included preventing crimes, posited that the need for awareness was key as some were ignorant of what constituted economic and financial crimes.
He argued that even if the courts order the maximum penalty to all offenders, a lack of sensitization will not breed much success in curbing the rates of criminality.
On the public aiding the commission’s activities, Mr. Uchenna who was accompanied by his deputy, Saidu Bawa, the head of the legal department, T. N Ndifon, Head of Counterterrorism, Collins Iho and that of the media department, Tessy Nwosu said petitions to the EFCC were free and could be done covertly or overtly in order to ensure that the welfare and security of the citizenry is guaranteed.
“This is the only avenue to make them vomit what they have taken from us and are now using to oppress us,” Mr. Uchenna said.
