CrossRiverWatch has obtained from sources, more details of the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) murdered in the early hours of Wednesday in Calabar.
ACP Egbe Eko Edum, a native of Abi Local Government Area in central Cross River, is said to be the nephew of Cross River Deputy Governor, Professor Ivara Esu.
The late cop’s mother is said to be Professor Esu’s sibling.
He was promoted to the rank of ACP in March 2019 in what was the largest promotion approved by the Police Service Commission.
8,916 officers were said to be promoted.
He was then posted to 73 Police Mobile Force Squadron in Magumeri, Borno State as commander.
Magumeri is one of the local government areas devastated by Boko Haram and is about 50 kilometers away from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
CrossRiverWatch had earlier reported that he had just arrived Calabar.
He is said to have been in Abuja where he attended a meeting with the Inspector General of Police alongside other MOPOL commanders.
Sources close to his family say he had reached out to his wife to assist him after his vehicle, a white Honda CRV broke down. The wife is said to have met him lying down near his vehicle with what looked like cuts from axes and machetes.
He was initially taken to Bakor hospital, a private facility which is nearby the scene of the incident. He was referred immediately but gave up the ghost moments later while been transported to the Nigerian Navy Reference Hospital.
His death has sparked a conversation on social media about the security situation in the State.
Kidnappings, gang wars and petty thievery have reportedly increased with a recent report listing the State as the most insecure amongst the six States of the South-South region.
