More details have emerged from the building which collapsed Monday at the Ayade Industrial Park located at the Good luck Jonathan Bypass in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.
Also, a gory video obtained shows where the worker, Effiong Okung, a carpenter, was trapped with a blood trail leading to his brains and a fragment of what looked like his skull.
Mr. Okung was said to be removing the roofing and wood which were to be replaced by metals when the building collapsed and trapped him in.
A native of Oron Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Okung is survived by a wife and two children aged seven and four, relatives who visited the scene told CrossRiverWatch.
The affected building is a large hall which sits next to another of the same dimension. Both are located behind the automated rice seedlings and seed manufacturing center commissioned by President Muhammadu Buhari a few years ago.
The second building has had it’s roofing and woodwork removed leaving it bare.
When this reporter visited the scene, the remaining walls on the affected building had given up from the foundation and were only supported by the leftover woodwork from the roofing.
Also, there seemed to be some sort of hasty evacuation of machinery, equipment and other items from the rice city.
Staff on duty declined comment and had initially prevented access until Mr. Okung’s friends and family arrived.
They could be heard complaining bitterly about the work done as the building has very few pillars which according to them was “bad architectural design and engineering”.
