A coalition of Civil Society Organisations operating in Cross River State have written the management of M. Saleh & co. ltd. over what they said is an infringement on the fundamental human rights of it’s staff.
An investigation by this Newspaper had shown that the company had penned down five names for sack after over half of it’s less than 100 staff in the Calabar factory protested on February 3, 2021 to press home demands for an increase in wages and better working conditions.
The five staff are to be sacked by February 28, 2021.
And, the coalition which comprises of the Reclaim Our Civic Space Project implemented by CrossRiverWatch and We The People; Policy Alert and Citizens Solution Network in it’s letter dated February 16th accused the company of violating the rights to expression and assembly of their staff, demanding that they reverse their “punitive” decision as it also violated the rights of the sacked workers to fair hearing.
Also, the Cross River and Akwa Ibom States branch of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria has promised to investigate the matter.
