5 Survive Ghastly Accident In Calabar

By Ushang Ewa

At least five survived a ghastly vehicle accident on Sunday afternoon at the Murtala Mohammed highway by Ekpo Iso street in Calabar eyewitnesses say.

The vehicle, a Toyota Sienna with registration number Abuja RBC96GU was traveling along the highway and attempted to make a right turn into Ekpo Iso street when it went head first into the side drainage that runs from the Zone 6 roundabout to Ikot Abasi Obori street by Beebobsco axis of the higway.

“The steering locked as he (the driver) was trying to turn into Ekpo Iso and it looks as if the brakes were not really active as the tires screeched until it went first into the gutter,” said a dark stout man who looked like he was in his mid forties. He declined mentioning his name but coordinated the tow truck that came to remove the vehicle.

Hit 95.9 FM Calabar’s correspondent, Happiness Ifiok told this reporter that she better understands why the State’s ministry of Environment often asks traders to leave the side of the highway.

She explained that, “women sit there to sell” which meant they could have been casualties even though a bar owner who queried why this reporter wanted his name instead of being sympathetic, claimed that the five passengers came out unhurt.

The accident happened at about 3:30PM with the vehicle laying upside down in the drainage while a truck mounted crane arrived at about 5:00PM to remove the vehicle which had a dented bonnet, roof and bumper as well as shattered lights.
