The Chief Judge of Cross River State, Hon. Justice Akon Ikpeme has convicted Mr. Godswill Idongesit Brownson, for rape of two children aged 5 and 7 years (names withheld to prevent stigmatisation) in Calabar, the capital of Cross River State.
Godswill, 29 years, bagged the 12 years sentence after he was found guilty of defilement of the two minor. Investigation and trial lasted for four years.
He has been remanded in Calabar Custodial Correctional facility.
Reacting to this, human rights activist and Principal Partner of Basic Rights Counsel, Barr. James Ibor showered praises on the Police for what he called “job well-done”.
He said: “The convict was arrested in November, 2017 for sexually assaulting the two minor, age 5 and 7. The convict was 25 years as at the date of arrest in 2017 and was arraigned in 2018.
“I thank the Hon. Chief Judge of Cross River State, Hon. Justice Akon Ikpeme for the judgement, the Commissioner of Police, the Attorney General of Cross River State, Hon. Tanko Ashang and Blessing Egwu for diligently prosecuting this case. I want to also thank Basic Rights Counsel Initiative for the support and case management services they provided for these survivors.
“I want to advice rapist to take dressing and tame the animal in them. Let us come together to end violence against women and girls today.”
