Ekpungu Resumes As EFCC Secretary

Cross River born legal practitioner, George Abang Ekpungu resumed today as the Secretary of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Ekpungu was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari in June this year in line with the EFCC act and was confirmed by the Senate despite a petition allegedly masterminded by allies of his former principal, Governor Ben Ayade.

“The new Secretary to the EFCC, Dr. George Ekpungu today, Wednesday October 27, 2021 formally assumed office,” the commission wrote on its verified Facebook page.

“Welcoming him to the headquarters of the Commission at Jabi, Abuja, the Executive Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa expressed delight that Ekpungu is coming on board at a time of fundamental reforms at the EFCC, noting that the Commission, over the last few months, had reviewed and adopted a number of policy documents geared towards improving its efficiency and effectiveness,” the commission said.

The commission shared photos of Dr. Ekpungu who served as Commissioner for New Cities Development under Mr. Ayade for three years can be seen shaking hands with Abdulrasheed Bawa, the Chairman of the commission.

As scribe of the commission, Dr. Ekpungu is expected to, in accordance with Section 8(2) of the EFCC Act serve as the head of the secretariat of the commission responsible for the administration of the secretariat and the keeping of the books and records of the commission for a term of five years.
