The Management of University of Calabar (UNICAL) has relieved Prof. Obeten Ekabua as the Head of Department of Computer Science in the institution.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Florence Obi gave the approval with immediate effect after Prof. Obeten was alleged to have extort students in his department.
A memo signed by the Registrar of the varsity, Mr. Gabriel Egbe noted that the former HOD engaged his students in compulsory buy of handouts, an act “the Vice Chancellor earnestly frowns at.”
Management further order immediate stoppage and refunds of money and enjoin students to report lecturers selling handouts as course requirement and those involved in other forms extortion.
The school authority has also set up a 3-man fact-finding committee headed by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (administration), Professor Michael Okom to investigate all reported cases of extortion and collection of unauthorized charges by lecturers, Heads of Departments with immediate effect for disciplinary actions.
