Five lawmakers in the Obanliku Local Government Council legislature have defected to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) months after they dumped the party for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The lawmakers announced their defections to their constituents at different areas in the council on Thursday.
This means the council legislature is now split even between the APC and PDP.
Elected in May 2020 on the platform of the PDP, the quintet switched allegiance after Governor Ben Ayade was railroaded into the APC.
Their defection will be viewed as a blow to the APC in Obanliku as public perception remains that they were allegedly handpicked by the Governor and his trusted allies.
They are Justine Adida representing Bisu ward, Frances Ololo from Busi ward, Helen Ishiakefe from Bishiri South ward, Polycarp Ugi-Ugbong representing Bendi 1 ward and the councilor representing Bebi ward whose name could nor be verified as at press time.
A video obtained by CrossRiverWatch shows PDP members burning a broom, which is the insignia of the APC at the defection of Mr. Polycarp. He was welcomed to the PDP by the party’s Chapter Chairman of Obanliku Local Government Area.

They later went on a unity rally and were received at Sankwala junction by a House of Representatives aspirant for the Obudu/Obanliku/Bekwarra federal constituency, Peter Akpanke who has been campaigning round the constituency.
