The Commissioner for Health in Cross River, Dr. Betta Edu has emerged as the consensus aspirant from the state for the position of Woman Leader ahead of the March 26, 2022, national convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The position is one of those zoned to the south-south region of the country alongside National Publicity Secretary among others. And, Mrs. Edu emerged after a meeting of aspirants from the State including the former Director General of the National Women Development Center, Dr. Mary Ekpere-Eta, former State lawmaker, Abbey Ukpukpen and Biase caretaker Chairman, Helen Egodo that was convened by the Chairman, Alphonsus Ogar Eba.
Several reports in circulation suggest the meeting was held last night at the Transcorp Hotel in Calabar, the State capital. A video in circulation also shows Mr. Eba asking other contestants to hold up Mrs. Edu’s hand to show support.
Political watchers say this was an unsurprising move by the Cross River State chapter of the APC, which has adopted a consensus approach in all of its leadership and candidate selection approach since Governor Ben Ayade dumped the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Also, with Mrs. Edu being a member of the party’s national reconciliation committee, it was easier to bank on her.
Meanwhile, the PDP, arising from its 95th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Wednesday, approved the commencement of sale of forms to aspirants for the party’s primaries leading up to the 2023 general elections.
A communiqué issued by its National Publicity Secretary said the party also approved a 50% reduction in the cost of forms for youths between 25 and 30 years of age, among other resolutions.
