The Nigerian Center for Disease Control, NCDC says Cross River State has recorded two confirmed cases of Monkeypox in 2022.
This was contained in the periodic epidemiology report of the NCDC released earlier this month.
Other States that have recorded confirmed cases in 2022 include Adamawa (three), Lagos (three), Abuja (two), Kano (two), Delta (two) and Imo (one).
Monkeyoox is a rare viral infection, which kills one in every 10 patients, but does not spread swiftly.
And, the NCDC report said between September 2017 to April 30, 2022, Cross River recorded 16 cases with one fatality. A total of 241 cases were confirmed nationwide out of 558 suspected ones, within the same period.
Eight deaths were also recorded with a Case Fatality Ratio of 3.3 per cent in six States – namely, Edo (two), Lagos (two), Imo (one), Cross River (one), FCT (one) and Rivers (one).
Also, Cross River recorded three more cases than four of its neighboring States combined. They are: Akwa Ibom (seven), Abia (three) Benue (two), and Ebonyi (one). However none of the neighboring States have recorded cases in 2022.
The NCDC said its “Monkeypox National Technical Working Group has been monitoring cases and strengthening preparedness/response capacity.”
