The Cross River State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, has called on political parties fielding gubernatorial candidates in the State to pick women as “running mates in the forthcoming general elections for the interest of fairness, equity, and justice.”
NAWOJ, in a statement signed by Mrs. Umo Basi-Edet, the Chairperson, and Mrs. Maria Ewa, the Secretary, said there is a need for the political parties to be more inconclusive and accommodate women.
“There is a need for gender sensitivity in all political offices to be reemphasized to promote gender equality in the country’s political system, especially ahead of the forthcoming 2023 general elections,” the statement reads in part.
The statement adds that women have since been clamoring for 35 percent affirmative action to allow them to contribute their quota to national development and that this is another opportunity for that.
It commended the different political parties in the State for the peaceful conduct of their primary elections and appealed that in the interest of inclusiveness and gender equality, women should be considered for positions.
