SSS Arrest Another UNICAL Lecturer Who Went To Surety Colleague

Nigeria’s secret police, the SSS on Monday, arrested and detained a lecturer in the Department of Political Science of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Mr. Jerry Agboh who served as surety for his colleague, Mr. Denis Inakefe, who was arrested in a gestapo-styled operation on Sunday.

Mr. Agboh signed the bail bond for Mr. Inakefe at about 8:30 PM on Sunday. And, on Monday, he accompanied him back to their facility at about 11:00 AM. Upon introducing himself, he was told that they were looking for him and was arrested and detained, while Mr. Inakefe was let go.

“I was told to go and look for another surety while he was detained,” Inakefe told CrossRiverWatch, adding that the duo, among others, were petitioned for inciting staff and students against management as well as for defamation.

“They did not allow me to see the petition, but I could sight about seven names when they read it to me and the letterhead was that of UNICAL,” Inakefe, who is billed to return for further interrogation by 3:00PM on Tuesday, said.

His recent posts on Facebook have been critical of Professor Florence Obi’s administration as Vice Chancellor, especially on the non-documentation and non-payrolling of staff engaged between 2019 and 2020 by the former Vice Chancellor, Professor Zana Akpagu.

The issues have drawn mixed reactions, with the National Assembly summoning the Vice Chancellor at some point over the matter.

Furthermore, Mr. Inakefe said he was asked to produce his appointment letter despite the fact that his documents and gadgets were carted away by SSS operatives when they stormed his house on Sunday morning.

“I wonder how they want me to produce a document that is still with them, including my laptop, which they have not released to me,” he said.
