The powerhouse, accounts, and audit sections of the Governor’s office extension in Calabar were on Saturday night gutted by fire.
Government House sources say the fire started on Saturday night at the powerhouse which supplies backup electricity to the Governor’s office on Saturday night with the fire raging until Sunday morning last weekend. Overnight, it spread to a nearby building that houses the extensions of the audit and account sections of the3 Government House Calabar.
The State Commandant of Calabar Command of Federal Fire Service, Mrs. Olumayowa Olomola, confirmed the incident and disclosed that a spark from the generator caused the fire and that operatives of the State’s fire service put out the fire.
Grassroot Reporters reports that the fire destroyed vital documents and other properties, affecting some offices attached to Governor Ben Ayade’s office.
Also, Christian Ita, the Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, said the fire incident did not cause major damage.
He said, “it was just a minor incident and no damage was caused by the incident. There was also no file damage. It was only a building attached to the Governor’s office, and no major activity took place there.”
However, Government House Sources said security operatives watched the inferno all night and took no action to put it out while preventing passers-by from gaining access.
