Currently, the main gate of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), Calabar campus has been shut down by students protesting insecurity in the campus.
Armed robbers in the wee hours of Saturday 19 November 2022 invaded female hostels, and made away with students’ phones, laptops, cooking utensils, and other valuables in an operation that lasted many hours.
And on Tuesday (today) the students who are more of girls shut the school entrance, restricting vehicular movement in and out of the campus.
Some in their nighties chant solidarity songs with pots, plates, spoons, fry pans, and leaves among others, calling for tight security within the varsity.
There have been complaints of gunshots within the campus by students at the resumption of the reversed academic calendar.
This is coming less than three weeks after the management of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) says they will tighten security in the institution haven “received classified intelligence report indicating imminent terror attack on staff and students” in the school.
At the time of filing this report, no one from the school management has come to address the aggrieved students who have resulted to throw stones causing fellow students and lecturers to scamper for safety.
