Former CrossRiverWatch reporter, Slyvia Akpan has won the Media Entrepreneur award for the year 2022.
The award organized by African Foundation for Young Media Professionals (AFYMP) is geared toward spurring young journalists, especially those still in the university.
Held at Centre for Management Development, Magodo, Lagos State, student journalists were recognized in Media Entrepreneur, Women in Journalism, Campus Journalism, and Disability and Inclusion categories.
The convener and Executive Director of AFYMP, Mr. Olaito Yinka noted that the purpose of AFYMP is to elevate the media in the landscape of Africa, adding: “We are blessed in having people who believe in what we do. We are focusing on the next generation of young media professionals,” because “there is no democracy without the influence of the media.”
The honors came shortly after a lecture on the theme: Sustainable Democracy In Nigeria: The Role Of The Media, with the Resident Electoral Commissioner of Lagos State Mr. Olusegun Agbaje as the keynote speaker.
Speaking on the award on Plustv, Slyvia a 400-level student of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) said the experiences and exposure acquired with CrossRiverWatch and other platforms were key to her writing skills and the award.
She said this will ignite her flair for writing more.
