Foremost fact-checking outfit, Dubawa, a brainchild of the Center for Journalism Innovation and Development, CJiD, has commenced its 2022/2023 Prof. Kwame Karikari Fact-Checking Fellowship.
In a virtual training that marked the commencement of the fellowship, the Director of Operations, CJID, Oluwatosin Alagbe said the center is a “media innovation think-tank that promotes a genuinely independent media through journalism and fact-checking” and that the fellowship is one of the ways it “targets and counter misinformation menace in West Africa.”
On her part, Caroline Anipah, Deputy Director, CJID said that this year’s fellowship has undergone some changes because of the feedbacks from the previous editions, adding that among other things fellows will be paired with mentors to guide them through the 3 months fellowship and to the publication of their fact-checks.
Caroline added that CJID works to equip newsrooms with the “skills and environment to make fact-checking and truth a norm,” and that the center is open to partnerships and collaborations to ensure fact-checking becomes a culture in journalism.
This year’s fellowship supported by National Endowment for Democracy has CrossRiverWatch’s Ogar Monday and 20 other journalists from online, radio, and TV stations in Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra-Leone, Ghana, and the Gambia, and is geared towards deepening the culture of fact-checking in reportage and newsroom in West Africa.
