#TDWA Episode 336 – Achieving Governance Agenda For An Inclusive Nigeria And Climate Change

TOPIC

Achieving Governance Agenda For An Inclusive Nigeria And Climate Change.

INTRODUCTION

Governance is the process of interaction through the laws, norms, power, or language of an organized society over a social system which includes family, tribe, formal or informal organization, territory, or across territories.

Governance is delivered by the government of a state, or by a network.

Inclusiveness which has always been a heated issue in governance on the other hand is the practice or policy of providing equal access to opportunities and resources for people who might otherwise be excluded or marginalized, such as those having physical or intellectual disabilities or belonging to other minority groups.

Women, youths, and persons living with disabilities are most times those excluded from equal distribution of resources but in social obligations such as voting during an election, these groups constitute a powerful constituency in Nigeria.

According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), they constitute 70 percent of people registered during the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) period from June 2021 to August 2022, making them the most important constituency in the election.

Inclusive governance is imperative to actualizing the dividends of a democratic system; however, previous advocacy efforts of women, youth, and persons living with disabilities on political and governance issues have not yielded the desired results.

What are the issues?

Do the 2023 general elections present a window of opportunity to change the narrative and put forward a coordinated voice of women, youth, and those living with disability to engage political actors for a greater and more inclusive Nigeria?

What factors impede good governance and inclusiveness?

Can climate change, said to be a long-term shift in temperatures and weather patterns which is a natural and world phenomenon due to man’s activities, be a threat to governance and inclusiveness?

Some of the major effects of climate change are increased temperature, drought, and flooding which basically refers to the covering or submerging of normally dry land with a large amount of water.

How can governance, an inclusive Nigeria, and climate change be achieved with the first lap of the 2023 elections which is less than 33 days away?

Will candidates commit themselves?

How can we have an election devoid of violence and other vices?

These and more form the basis of this week’s ‘The Dialogue With Agba Jalingo’ with the topic: Achieving Governance Agenda For An Inclusive Nigeria And Climate Change.
