The 10th Cross River State House of Assembly has pledged to tackle flood headlong in the State after Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) forecast.

In a plenary held on Tuesday 18 July 2023, the member representing Yakurr 1 State Constituency, Honorable Cyril James Omini, proposed a motion calling on the State Government through the Ministry of Environment and Waste Management Agency to urgently desilt all drainage systems in Calabar Metropolis.

His proposal is coming a few days after the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) had predicted devastating flooding in the Niger Delta communities as well as other regions of the country.

The State Assembly in the plenary said the government will move swiftly to avert future flood disasters in the State.

The Speaker, Hon. Elvert Ayambem, assured residents of the Calabar Metropolis that the State government under the leadership of Sen. Bassey Otu is poised to tackle headlong, the menace of flooding that might befall the State.

“The State government will always be a step ahead in tackling adverse weather effects and the danger it poses to the State. Government is aware of its responsibility to evolve strategic methods that will improve the environment and guarantee a flood-free Cross River for all.”
