Some aggrieved staff of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) who were employed between 2019/2020 staged a peaceful protest in front of the University gate Friday morning.
The protesters carry placards with various inscriptions indicating that they have not been paid for the past four years.
According to some of the protesting staff, we “were employed in the year 2019, gone through all processes and have not even been added to the payroll and have not been paid.”
They alleged that they were employed during the administration of the former Vice Chancellor of Professor Zana Akpagu. Since then, they have not been paid.
They explained further: “We have gone through the process of documentation, a lot of lives have been lost in this process, most of us died miserably in hospitals, we have been in the race to get a voice from the public so that we will be able to be payrolled and get our pay, it is sad that after acquiring education to better our lives, we don’t get the value of our education, we depend on this job to feed our families and cater for our needs.
“We are calling on the present administration to intervene, we mean no harm, the VC is like a mother to us, and we want her to take drastic measures for us to be paid.”
Meanwhile, the matter is before the National Assembly of which the VC has been summoned not less than twice.
The protesters called on authorities to come to their rescue.
