We Are Not Intimidated By Breast Cancer – Governor Otu’s Wife Led March, Calls For Early Examination

As the World celebrates the 2023 World Breast Cancer Day, the First Lady of Cross River State, Mrs. Eyoanwan Otu has called for early examination and detection.

Breast cancer awareness is an annual event that is held every October 21, to raise awareness, action, and support in the fight against breast cancer.

The Governor’s wife represented by Mrs. Comfort Okon made the call at the kick-off of this year’s walk at the Millenium Park down to Municipal Garden where she charged all and sundry not to be intimidated by the deadly disease.

“Breast cancer is a formidable opponent that knows no boundaries. It affects women, men, and families across the globe, regardless of age, race, or social status. It is a disease that not only impacts the physical well-being of individuals but also disrupts their entire lives and has a profound effect on their loved ones.

“Today, as we walk together, we are making a powerful statement. We are saying that breast cancer will not intimidate us, it will not define us, and it will not defeat us. We march with determination and hope, knowing that together we can make a difference in the lives of those affected by this disease.”

The Nigerian Medical Association Chairman, Cross River branch Doctor Felix Archibong advised that early examination is best for early treatment.

“Cancer is very high but the unfortunate thing is that people present late when we can do little or nothing.

“If you pick it up early enough, then the outcome of treatment would give us a better outcome. Now people like presenting late because they feel that breasts are a private part and should not be exposed.”

Lending voice, the Secretary General of Pink Africa Foundation, Gedah Etefia said the walk is important to create and educate the people about what cancer is all about especially women.

The theme for this year’s breast cancer is ‘Reset Breast Cancer’.
