Personnel of the Cross River State Command of the Nigerian Police Force have taken over the premises of the State House of Assembly following an impeachment saga that greeted the House.

As early as 8:am on Thursday, May 23, 2024, CrossRiverWatch visited the Assembly to observe the atmosphere, it was nothing short of a graveyard-like situation.

The Speaker, Honorable Elvert Ayambem was allegedly Impeached by a two-thirds majority comprising 17 out of 25 members of the House on the account of misconduct, financial misappropriation, and other grounds.

CrossRiverWatch observed heavily armed policemen in and outside the Assembly.

Sources had earlier said the Assembly was shut since yesterday, by the State Police Commissioner, CP Gyogon Grimah after the plenary drama.

The whereabouts of the Assembly Maze is still undisclosed. But the environment is calm and under tight security.

Confirming the Assembly shutdown, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Irene Ugbo, said, “For now the Assembly is shut down. Normalcy has returned, unlike yesterday when there was pandemonium.

“They are politicians and they make their decisions. Ours is to protect lives and properties and make sure no hoodlums come and disorganize the place. Our men are on ground and we are in charge of the area.”

Ayambem’s removal has attracted mixed reactions across the State.
