Technology: Cross River Police Command Launches, Commence Training Of Officers On Surveillance Drone Operations

The Cross River State Command of the Nigerian Police Force has launched drones/ Unmanned Aviation Vehicles (UAVs) aerial surveillance operations training to beef up security in the State.

The Command said the initiative aims to enhance the State’s security apparatus by integrating cutting-edge technology into its surveillance efforts.

With not less than twenty (20) personnel of the Force drawn from various divisions across the State, the program is designed to equip personnel with the necessary skills and knowledge to operate drones effectively for aerial surveillance purposes, as well as enhance the Command’s situational awareness, improve response times, and bolster overall security within the State.

The event held on Tuesday, May 14, 2024 at the Police Officers’ Mess, Moore Road, Calabar, the State Police Boss, CP Gyogon Grimah in his opening remarks highlighted the importance of embracing technology to combat crime effectively.

CP Grimah averred that, as the world and technology advances in every sphere of life, there is need to also incorporate it in the security arena; as men of the underworld applies technology in committing crimes.

The State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, emphasized the State Government’s commitment to providing necessary support for initiatives aimed at enhancing security.

Governor Otu represented by the State Security Adviser, General Obono Eno (Rtd), assured his government will give a priority to security-driven technology.

Facilitators of the training conducted practical sessions on drone operation, including flight control, data collection, and analysis techniques. Participants engaged in hands-on exercises to familiarize themselves with the UAVs and their functionalities.

The training also included discussions on privacy and legal considerations regarding drone usage in law enforcement activities.

The Police noted that with the support of key stakeholders including the State government and media, the initiative is poised to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of law enforcement efforts in Cross River State.

“The knowledge and skills gained from this training will enable personnel to conduct aerial surveillance operations more efficiently, ultimately contributing to a safer environment for all residents.”
