Following the two week break embarked on by the Management of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), due to the nationwide protest by some angry Nigerians against the biting hard economy, the school environment has witnessed total tranquility.
Our reporter went round the Calabar main campus of the university and observed the unusual quietness in lecture halls and offices.
The university’s closure was a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and staff amidst the protests climaxing today, August 10th, 2024.
“I’m surprised by the quietness,” said a student who craved anonymity. “Usually, students would find ways to protest, but this time, it’s like they are heeding the state government and management’s warning.”

The student said both staff and students are exercising caution to stay away from the campus to avoid being hurt.
“I don’t want to risk my safety,” another student said, adding that “I will wait until the situation improves before returning to campus.”
Meanwhile, the school management has announced a resumption of academic activities on Monday August 12, 2024 for the continuation of second semester 2023/2024 session examinations.
