The Management of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has banned with immediate effect the Law Students Association of Nigeria (LAWSAN), UNICAL Chapter over alleged misconduct and unethical behavior.

The proscription which was conveyed in a letter signed by the University Registrar, Dr. Mrs. Chukwuka Icha and made available by the University Public Relations Officer Mr. Effiong Eyo stated that the decision of the management of the institution followed LAWSAN’s reckless resort to social media use painting the University in bad light, and disregarding extant laws and the matriculation oath taken by every student.

“UNICAL Management frowns at such unethical displays of insubordination and disobedience to constituted authority by students studying to become lawyers, advocates, and judges.”

The letter directed the current LAWSAN Executive Council to immediately hand over official properties and documents to the Faculty Officer, Faculty of Law, and concentrate on their studies.

The management warned all law students to stay away from all LAWSAN union activities, as Management will no longer tolerate any unethical behavior from them.

The letter also restricts staff and students from talking to the press, stating that “no student or staff has the right to address the press, put up social media posts, or grant interviews to discuss University matters without express authorization from Management. Adding that the proscription takes immediate effect until further notice.
