Cross River State Governor, Sen. Bassey Otu at the weekend hosted members of the Hausa/Fulani and non-indigene communities to a special Ramadan break fast at the Executive Council Chamber of the Governor’s Office, marking the end of Ramadan and the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr while issuing warning to scrap vandals.
The well-attended gathering drew religious leaders, community representatives, and Senior Government officials, converging in a shared atmosphere of gratitude, reflection, and renewed commitment to peaceful coexistence in the state.
In his remarks, Governor Otu extended warm felicitations to the Muslim faithful, noting that Ramadan embodies virtues that transcend religion. “The lessons of Ramadan, sacrifice, discipline, compassion, and devotion, are universal values that should guide our conduct as individuals and as a government,” he said.

Reaffirming his administration’s philosophy, the Governor stressed the centrality of inclusion in governance. “In Cross River State, there is no distinction between indigene and non-indigene. We are one people with a shared destiny, and my government will continue to ensure that every resident feels a true sense of belonging,” he declared.
He urged leaders of various communities to sustain collaboration with the government in fostering peace and stability. “Development can only thrive in an atmosphere of unity. I call on all of you to remain ambassadors of peace and partners in progress,” Otu added.
He used the occasion to express serious concern over the rising activities of scrap metal scavengers, warning that the destruction of public infrastructure under the guise of scrap collection would no longer be tolerated. “We cannot continue to watch critical government infrastructure vandalized by individuals seeking scrap metals. This must stop,” he warned.
Addressing leaders of the Hausa/Fulani community in particular, the Governor urged immediate intervention. “I appeal to your leadership to call your youths to order. Rein them in and ensure that those involved in these destructive activities desist forthwith. The government will not hesitate to wield the full weight of the law against defaulters,” he warned.
Despite the caution, Governor Otu emphasized that his administration remains committed to fairness and dialogue. “This is not about profiling any group, but about protecting our common assets. We must all take responsibility for safeguarding what belongs to the people,” he clarified.
Earlier in his address, the Chairman of the Cross River State Muslim Welfare and Pilgrims Board, Kabir Olowolayemo, commended the Governor for fostering unity and inclusion across religious and ethnic divides. “Your Excellency, your leadership has given every community a voice. You have demonstrated that governance can be both firm and compassionate,” he said.
Imam Olowolayemo also responded to the governor’s concerns, assuring that community leaders would take proactive steps. “We hear your concerns loud and clear. We will engage our people and ensure that such actions do not tarnish the image of our community. We are partners in protecting the peace and assets of this state,” he pledged.
Also, the leader of the non-indigene communities, Okey Maduake, lauded the administration’s achievements, describing them as impactful and people-oriented. “Your Excellency, your strides in infrastructure, security, and social harmony are visible to all. We are proud to be part of this progressive journey,” he remarked.
Maduake reaffirmed the support of non-indigene residents, noting that the governor’s inclusive approach has strengthened their sense of belonging. “We stand with your administration and will continue to encourage our members to be law-abiding and supportive of government policies,” he added.
The event closed with prayers for sustained peace, unity, and prosperity in Cross River State, Nigeria and the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as stakeholders collectively reaffirmed their commitment to building a harmonious and forward-looking society.
