Man Allegedly Kills Lover In Cross River

By Kelvin Ololo

Tension gripped Ogoja Local Government Area of Cross River State following the killing of a 26-year-old woman, an incident that sparked outrage and protests within the community.

According to preliminary police reports, the incident occurred on March 28, 2026, at about 6:00 a.m, when a 35-year-old man, identified as Malime Sunday Ejor, allegedly attacked his girlfriend, Moshie Lucy Igu, at a farm in Nwang Village, Ekajuk of the LGA.

The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said the suspect reportedly took the victim to a nearby stream close to the farm, where he inflicted machete cuts on her, leading to her death.

Police operatives, upon receiving the report, moved to the scene and arrested the suspect. He was, however, rescued from an attempted mob attack by angry youths at the scene. He remains in police custody while investigations continue.

Police authorities also confirmed that arrangements are ongoing to deposit the victim’s remains at the General Hospital Mortuary in Ogoja.

The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Calabar for further investigation.

However, the transfer of the suspect out of Ogoja triggered fresh anger in the Ekajuk community.

On Monday, March 30, 2026, women and youths from Nwang I and II, as well as other parts of Ekajuk Clan, staged a protest at the Area Command headquarters in Ogoja.

The protesters demanded that the suspect be returned to the community, expressing frustration over what they believed was an attempt to deny them immediate justice.

The protest later turned violent, as some members of the crowd attacked police officers and vandalised property within the premises. Police said a Hyundai vehicle and parts of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) building were damaged during the unrest.

Security personnel responded by deploying smoke canisters to disperse the crowd and restore order. Eight suspects were arrested in connection with the disturbance but were later released to a community leader to help calm tensions, the police said.

Calm has since returned to the area, although residents continue to demand swift and transparent justice over the killing.
