Cross River Governor, Senator Ben Ayade has described as tragic the loss of lives at a viewing center in Calabar, the state capital.

Ayade who is currently in Geneva, Switzerland for a world summit on Neglected Tropical Diseases said it was horrifying and heart wrenching that lives of young men were lost through electrocution and noted that the incident marks a dark chapter in the life of the state.

A statement signed by his spokesperson, Christian Ita commiserated with the families of the victims and promised that the state government will look into the likely cause of the incident with a view to preventing a re-occurrence.

Sources in Government House Calabar also told CrossRiverWatch that Ayade is cutting short his trip to return home and deal with the matter as he is “horrified” over the incident.

CrossRiverWatch had earlier reported that about seven (7) are feared dead in the tragedy which occurred at Akpandem street in Inyangasang area of Atimbo in the state capital Thursday night, following the explosion of a transformer, popularly referred to as ‘First Transformer’ which caused the high tension cable to melt and drop on the viewing center constructed mostly with corrugated iron roofing sheets.

30 were reportedly affected with about 23 suffering first, second and third degree burns.
