Two unidentified men have been killed by a mob in the early hours of Sunday after they were suspected of involvement in a robbery along Ekpo Abasi, near Yellow Duke, in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The Cross River State Police Command said the circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.
The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah Akata, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, August 30, 2026.
According to the police, preliminary information indicated that the two men were allegedly apprehended and attacked by a mob after they were suspected of being involved in a robbery.
Police operatives subsequently visited the scene, documented the incident and commenced preliminary investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and identify the two deceased men.
The remains of the victims were evacuated from the scene with the assistance of relevant local government authorities for appropriate preservation.
The latest incident has again brought the danger of mob action and jungle justice into focus, particularly the risk of people being punished or killed on mere suspicion before the facts of an allegation are independently investigated.
The police warned residents against taking the law into their own hands, stressing that suspected offenders should be arrested, where lawful, and immediately handed over to the police or other authorized security agencies for investigation and prosecution.
The Command urged the public to resist the temptation of jungle justice, no matter the allegation against a suspect, adding that killing or attacking a person on suspicion of a crime is not justice and could result in the loss of an innocent life.
Members of the public were therefore advised to report criminal activities and hand suspects over to lawful authorities rather than acting as accusers, judges and executioners.
